Title: Are you an “A” Student?

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15

Most students pride themselves in their academic achievements and the prestigious institutions they have attended. The acronym at the end of their names signifies their various qualifications. This supposedly makes us wiser than the average Joe and have a feeling of superiority.

I wondered if God is also qualifying his children and How well we are doing on his grading scales. Life is an institution in itself with various examinations. While reading the scripture some time ago I heard a whisper from the Spirit of God, “Who is marking the paper?” To which I replied, “I didn’t know I was taking an examination”, suddenly I had an epiphany from the following words “Study to shew you approved unto God” (2 Timothy 2:15). If God is the approver then what activities is he qualifying me for, several questions echoed through my mind like

  • What subjects am I studying now?
  • When is the examination date?
  • What is the Pass mark?
  • How do I know if I have passed?
  • Do I get promoted to the next class?
  • When was the last time I got a promotion?

We can be rest assured that If God is grading our exam paper, we can’t cheat. He would not give us an A grade when we deserve a C or vice versa. He won’t promote us to the next phase or class when we haven’t passed the previous class.

The subjects we require to take varies depending on our stage of growth and walk with the Lord. There is a class on love, patience, hope, faith etc to ensure that a Christian is thoroughly equipped for the journey ahead. The irony is that many Christians, though they have been believers for many years, are repeating the same class over and over again. There is no difference between them and a new convert. God’s examination as no timetable; for example, the class of patience might require you to take an examination while standing in queue at local grocery store.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” – Colossians 3:23

Everybody is after success these days according to the standard of the world. They want bigger houses, larger vehicles, expensive clothes etc. this are factor we judges ourselves to be truly successful. But we could be in possession of these things are yet be failing on God’s standard. So I close by asking are you an A student in God’s book?
