Title: Developing Intimacy with God
“Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him” – Isaiah 64:4
Intimacy is oneness of God’s Spirit and our spirit. Do you remember what it feels like being in love? Developing intimacy with God is like developing intimacy in a relationship; it takes time, effort, energy and commitment. It doesn’t happen automatically or accidentally. It comes from a consistency way of life which is pleasing unto God as we learn to trust and depend on him. Intimacy takes vulnerability. Sometimes we treat God like a spare tyre and only we call on him we need something.
Communication is the life of every relationship. When the communication ceases then the relationship starts to die. It takes time to get to know somebody. Reading the bible and praying is good however many are scared of silence. We are afraid to turn down the volume around us and listen to the God’s still small voice (1 kings 19:11-12). Being alone with the Lord is crucial to developing intimacy with God. You get to know God by talking to Him which is a two-way communication.
[pullquote]Our modern lifestyle considers silence as boring or inactive, the scriptures demands “Be still, and know that I am God” – Psalms 46:10[/pullquote]Our attitude must be like that of dry sponge that is willing to soak up everything God’s presence has to offer (Psalms 63:1). Developing the sort of closeness with God we desire is like running a marathon and not a short sprint. It takes full commitment on daily basis. We must avoid approaching God’s presence with a shopping list, although He delights in hearing our prayers. He wants a relationship that goes beyond “give me, give me”. The scripture records that God often visited Adam and Eve at the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). When we are alone with him we ask for nothing than more of His presence in our lives. He wants the things the things we need before we ask him (Isaiah 65:24).
“Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you.” – James 4:8
If God seems far away, guess who moved away? When we know a person intimately, you know who they are, how they think, and what they like or dislike. Intimacy is developed with having the right Priorities. Everyone likes to go to a place they are being celebrated. Praises is the celebration of God, who He is and what He has done.
The Psalmist says “Great is our lord and greatly to be praised “- Psalms 145:3.
Intimacy with God opens us to new depth of secrets with Him (Luke 9:28-36). God said, shall do a thing without telling my friend Abraham (Gen 18:17). Abraham became God’s confidant, He valued his opinion matters and decisions he was going make.
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever …” – Deuteronomy 29:29
Secondly, intimacy with God gives accuracy. Our lives are no longer a matter of trial and error. Noah knew of the coming flood while others laughed at him. Guess who had the last laugh. I believe 90% of success is knowing what to do and then doing do it. Many have wasted valuable energy in the wrong direction. Time is irreversible, hence we must anchor with the all-knowing God. The possibilities are limitless.
