Godliness with Contentment Great Gain
Scripture: “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” – 1 Timothy 6:6
Godliness is a God-centered life. It grows, not through the pursuit of a process, but through the presence of a person. Contentment is finding joy in what God has given to you. The opposite of contentment is greed which destroys your capacity to enjoy what God has given.Contentment is a Christian grace that grows over time. It does not come quickly, easily or naturally. Paul says “I have learned to be content” (Philippians 4:12). Being discontented is a universal problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re single, if you’re married, if you’re widowed, if you’re rich, poor, black, brown, white, old, young, in college or out of college. Every human heart struggles with this. Contentment is the direct fruit of having no higher ambition than to belong to the Lord at His disposal.
- Contentment comes from focusing on the Lord as the Savior whom I must serve. The scriptures says, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matt. 6:33).
[pullquote] Contentment comes from focusing on the Lord as the Sufficient One whom I must trust.
[/pullquote] Why is godliness with contentment great gain?
- You may wander from the faith
- You may lack gratitude
- You may lose your Joy
- You may act out of character
our discontentment is ingratitude. We become so mindful of what we want and don’t have that it suffocates our ability to be thankful for what we do have. Contentment isn’t denying one’s feelings about wanting and desiring what they can’t have, but instead it exhibits a freedom from being controlled by those feelings. Contentment isn’t pretending things are right when they are not, but instead it displays the peace that comes from knowing that God is bigger than any problems and that he works them all out for our good.
Money is a great servant but a terrible master. If you set your heart on money, money will break your heart. You will not keep what you gain. You will fall into powerful temptations. You may wander from the faith. You will pierce yourself with many griefs and sorrows. That’s why godliness with contentment is great gain.
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. – Philippians 4:12
Finally, find sufficiency in Jesus Christ “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13). Christ can generate a contented spirit within us amidst all that is happening around us.
