Title: The Most Expensive Meal
Scripture: And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. – Luke 22:19 -20
A little girl asked her mother, “Mommy, why do you cut the ends off the meat before you cook it?” The girl’s mother told her that she thought it added to the flavour by allowing the meat to better absorb the spices, but perhaps she should ask her grandmother since she always did it that way. So the little girl found her grandmother and asked, “Grandma, why do you and Mommy cut the ends of the meat off before you cook it?” Her grandmother thought a moment and answered, “I think it allows the meat to stay tender because it soaks up the juices better, but why don’t you ask your Nana? After all, I learned from her, and she always did it that way.” The little girl was getting a little frustrated, but climbed up in her great-grandmother’s lap and asked, “Nana, why do you cut the ends off the meat before you cook it?” Nana answered, “I had to; my cooking pot wasn’t big enough.”
We do a lot of things in life, and seldom stop to ask why. We develop habits and traditions, and we can forget why we do certain things. Communion is perhaps the most expensive meal in history. It is foundation of the new covenant. But it has become so ritualistic in our church that its potency is forgotten by a lot of Christian. Rhe Communion is so much more than a religious tradition or a mid-service snack. A communion is supernatural meal for the nourishment of spirit. Here are some wrong reasons why people take the communion:
- We do not partake of it because everyone else is
- We do not partake of it if we don’t understand it’s meaning
- We do not partake of it because our parents want us too
- We do not partake of it because we are thirsty or want a cracker
- We do not partake to look good to others
- We do not partake if we know we are not right with the Lord
Here some key reasons why we need to partaker in the Communion
- We cannot be a full partaker of Christ until we partaker of his flesh and blood
- The communion destroys any spiritual inferiority complexes within us
- The communion signifies our allegiance to the Christ who is the author and the finisher of our faith
- The Communion is one of the way we can deal with the lust of the flesh.
- the communion gives us access to divine Illumination (See Luke 24:22-31)
How do we approach or part take of the Communion table
Internal Examination: We must examine our heart and make sure we are thoroughly born again. Paul Said: “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” I Corinthians 11:28-29.
External Examination : It is a time to be mindful that we are “not an island unto ourselves”. As children of God we are a living part of the Body of Christ. Our lives touch others as the lives of others touch us. Our lives touch others in the fellowship of the church:
The Bible says, “For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.” I Corinthians 10:17.
