Title: Bond of Peace
Scripture: Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. – Ephesians 4:3
When you by God’s grace became a Christian, your view on the world changed too. Before you became a Christian, you may have cared about the general welfare of others, but now as a Christian more is expected of you. By the peace of God, which the Holy Spirit has worked in your hearts, you are united to all believers in this world.
This “unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” protects us from the division that is sown by the enemy. We cannot assume that there will always be peace among God’s children. Unfortunately, the old flesh sometimes raises its ugly head and there is conflict in the church. Therefore, Paul encourages us to make haste to protect the unity in the church and to do so with great diligence.
One great spiritual truth that I have learnt is in Proverbs 6 tells us. “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him …” Among the seven things God hates is – “… he that soweth discord among brethren.”
Unity is not optional. We must endeavour ” to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). Our walk, our way of life, must be worthy of this call to peace in Christ. Some of the greatest benefits we enjoy as Christians comes from the bond of peace. God’s peace brings the one true-hope to our heart and soul. God’s peace erases guilt and shame for it brings forgiveness through the blood of Christ. God’s peace removes despair for we have fellowship with our loving Heavenly Father, who will never leave us or forsake us. God’s peace removes loneliness for we know that even when we are alone in our houses we are united by this bond of faith with other Christians all over the world. Even if you have no biological family to call your own, you are part of the family of believers on earth and in heaven. Your fellow Christians are there to share your joys and sorrows.
[pullquote]
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Mt 5:9) Not the troublemakers, but the peacemakers.[/pullquote] Selfishness is the source of much of the sin in our lives. We’re all naturally selfish, self-centred people. No one should teach a child to grab a toy and say – ‘Mine!’ That’s part of their fallen nature. Unfortunately, most people never grow up or out of that self-centred attitude and therefore they bring this self-centeredness into their homes, workplaces, and even the church.
Love is the “bond of perfection,” the “the bond of peace,” the glue that binds the members of the body together in Christ. We love one another as Jesus has loved us. Christian unity is a gift from God that must be preserved, kept, maintained. We must be careful that we do not lose the unity of the Spirit.
This amazing love fills us with humility in the presence
