Title: Growing in the Knowledge of God

Scripture: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…” 2 Peters 3:18

Introduction

God’s purpose for every believer is that they would grow in the knowledge of him. Knowledge is the foundation of everything we do as Christians. The knowledge of God is like a garment we put on that is way too big for us. When you have a new baby, you never buy clothes that are just the size of the infant right now. You know that your baby is going to grow. But the interesting thing is that for a Christian, the growing process never stops. The knowledge of God is a garment that you could never fully grow into. The knowledge of God is so vast, and deep, and wide, and high that you could spend a lifetime growing in your knowledge of God, and you would still have an incredible amount of growing yet to do.( Romans 11:33-34)

Just as we pass through formal education from primary to University, God expects us to graduate from one facet of knowledge of Him to the next. (1 Peter 2:2, Hebrews 5:12). Growth is not only for children but includes Mature Christians as well. Mature Christians are expected to grow primarily in the areas of experience and application of God’s word. The Principles here is that we maintain our hunger and thirst for God’s words regardless of what phase we are in the journey.A Teachable Spirit is always needed.

  • A Hungry Christian is a Healthy Christian: A child without an appetite for food indicate something is wrong. If we have no appetite for the Word, either we are very sick or we are dead. How keen is your appetite? This is a reflection of your spiritual health. A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t!
  • There is no end to the Knowledge of God: For a primary school student the sum of two and two is four. For a PHD student if he is asked the sum of two and two. He might ask you at what speed is the two travelling, because If two is travelling close to the speed of light, then the sum of two and two is less than three. You can never say, “I’ve arrived. I know enough, I don’t need to learn any more. You can never say, “My knowledge of God is superior to other people’s knowledge of God, so I don’t need to learn any more.” .

We can grow consistently in our knowledge of God by committing ourselves to a regular and disciplined Intake of God’s Word. Here are some points to help us:

  1. A regular and consistent study of the Scripture. (2 Timothy 2:15)
  2. A regular and consistent of prayer lifestyle. (Luke 18:1)
  3. A regular and consistent fellowship with godly people.(Hebrews 10:25)
  4. A regular and consistent attendance at worship services where the Word of God is preached(Romans 10:17)

Finally, obedience to the knowledge of God that you have already received is a necessary ingredient for the reception, assimilation, and application of further knowledge of God.
