Title : The Power of Resurrection
Scripture : That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death – Philippians 3:10
Resurrection is central is Christianity, in the words of Paul our preaching would be in vain, if Jesus had not risen from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:14). There was once a Muslim in Africa who converted to Christianity, much to the dismay of his Muslim community. Some of his friends asked him, ‘Why have you become a Christian?’ He answered, ‘Well, its like this. Suppose you were going down the road and suddenly the road forked in two directions, and you didn’t know which way to go, and there at the fork in the road were two men, one dead and one alive–which one would you ask which way to go?’
[pullquote] But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, – 1 Peter 3:15[/pullquote]According to I Corinthians 15:12-19. He identifies seven consequences for us if Jesus’ body was decomposing in a grave somewhere:
- Our preaching is without foundation
- Our Faith has no Foundation
- We are all false witnesses about God, claiming that He did what He did not
- Our faith is worthless
- We are still in our sins
- All who have “died in Christ” are really dead
- We are to be pitied
Why is Resurrection so Important?
- The resurrection of our Lord was unique because of His deity: a resurrected Jesus confirms the truth of Christianity. Our faith is not founded on a fairy tale. It’s founded on fact. Jesus declared Himself to be God, to be equal with the Father, to forgive sins, to be the only way to God,
- The resurrection of our Lord was unique because of the death which preceded and necessitated His resurrection.
- The resurrection of our Lord was unique as an event which had no precedent anywhere else in the history of the word.
- The resurrection of Christ was necessary to prove that Jesus Christ was who He claimed to be.
- The resurrection of Christ was necessary to prove that Jesus Christ had accomplished what He had promised.
- The resurrection is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.
- The resurrection of Christ is vital element of a saving faith.
Finally, a resurrected Jesus makes transformation possible. Sin no longer has to dominate our lives. Paul, an eyewitness to the risen Jesus, explains: “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you” (Romans 8:10-11). Congratualation, He is risen
