Title: Living under the influence Part 1: Can a Christian have a demon?

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” – Revelation 3:20

I was asked a question, “can a Christian have a demon?” The answer is yes. Let me explain the answer using a simple analogy of friendship

  • There are friends we do not let pass the front door of our house.
  • There are friends we will invite in to sit in our living room.
  • There are friends who can go into our refrigerator at will.
  • There are friends who can go upstairs to our bedroom or other rooms in the house and sleep.

Each friend has limits and boundaries. The question is, “what limit and boundaries did you give to Jesus when he knocked on the door of your heart?” You might have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour but you did not let him pass the living room or restricted His movement in your house (1 Cor. 6:19). The spirit of man is regenerated at new birth (2 cor. 5: 17), but the mind and soul of man is filled with filth from the past which can remain long after he or she has accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour, hence Paul recommended the renewal of our mind (Rom. 12:2).

Let me make a distinction between demons or angels. Angels are celestial beings which are mighty, while demons are disembodied spirits, desperately looking for a body to possess. Demons can cause depression, uncontrollable lust, addictions including physical sickness and diseases in the body. The scriptures tell us the story of the woman who was bent over for 18 years by the spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:11)

“What happens when an evil spirit comes out of a man? It goes through dry areas looking for a place to rest. But it doesn’t find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives there, it finds the house empty. The house has been swept clean and put in order. 45 Then the evil spirit goes and takes with it seven other spirits more evil than itself. They go in and live there. That man is worse off than before. That is how it will be with the evil people of today. – Matthew 12:43-45

There are people who are sick but cannot be diagnosed by medical doctors because there are no viruses or bacterias to pinpoint as the source; yet the pain is real and excruciating. There are ways demons gain access into people’s life. Sin is the primary avenue. For example, having unholy sex can create unholy soul ties, which creates bridges into your life (1 Corinthians 6:16). We encourage all our new converts and visitors to attend our next step classes to get filled with the word of God.

[pullquote] “I don’t understand what I do. I don’t do what I want to do. Instead, I do what I hate to do.” – Romans 7:15[/pullquote]Have you ever felt there are areas of your lives you feel helpless or powerless. You have confessed, you have renounced yet there is no difference. You might have been to a psychologists and psychiatrists. There are cases of drug users who have relapsed back into their habits after spending thousands on treatment or rehabilitation. Trying to cast out a demon which has a legitimate right in that person’s life can be very dangerous or a futile exercise. It is time to submit to the Lordship of Jesus complete it.
